The American Civil Liberties Union says conditions at the maximum security unit of Indiana's Wabash Valley Correctional facility has driven some inmates to suicide and others to self-mutilation. The ACLU is filing a federal lawsuit over conditions at the prison in the western Indiana town of Carlisle. Ken Falk, legal director for the Indiana Civil Liberties Union, said locking up prisoners with mental illness in small, windowless cells is "psychological torture." He said four mentally ill inmates have killed themselves. He says others have attempted suicide, injured themselves or have had hallucinations. The Indiana Department of Correction hasn't yet commented on the lawsuit. |
