| US grants early release of 6,000 “drug offenders” |

The US Justice Department will grant early releases to about 6,000 federal inmates who were imprisoned due to drug charges. According to NBC news, the inmates will be freed between October 30 and November 2. Never again in the US history there was such a high number of one-time releases and even the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon welcomed the decision. According to the UN the early release of the drug offenders is an effort by the US authorities to ease overcrowding in prisons and provide a degree of redress for persons who received disproportionately long sentences for non-violent drug-related offenses. The release of the prison inmates had been expected for months, as in 2014 the US Sentencing Commission decided to change the sentencing guidelines for drug offenders.
