The top two administrators at New Jersey's Bayside State Prison in Cumberland County, where a Jan. 1 brawl injured more than two dozen officers, will be transferred, the head of the prison officers' union told the Atlantic City Press. Acting administrator Greg Bartkowski and chief of officers Steve Keith Walters are to be moved to another state correctional facility, said Troy Ferus, president of the New Jersey State Corrections Association. Department of Corrections spokesman Matt Schuman said Saturday that "administrative and operational changes" would be made at the prison, but did not specify what they would be. The melee at the medium-security prison broke out in the dayroom of a trailer complex used as housing for about 140 inmates. The officers were beaten with mop handles, irons, broomsticks, and locks wrapped in socks. Twenty-eight officers were taken to hospitals. Afterward, more than two dozen inmates were transferred to other prisons. |
