| Lawmakers seek to reduce prison population over next 10 years |

ANCHORAGE - Alaska lawmakers asked the Department of Corrections in a September letter to reduce its prison population by 15 to 25 percent over the next 10 years. This would entail a reduction of prisoners by 790 to 1,300 from the total population of about 5,200. Instead of being in prison, offenders would instead go to a halfway house or be put on an ankle monitoring system, the Department of Corrections said. "Does that mean we let everybody out?
