Lawmakers seek to reduce prison population over next 10 years

ANCHORAGE -

Alaska lawmakers asked the Department of Corrections in a September letter to reduce its prison population by 15 to 25 percent over the next 10 years.

This would entail a reduction of prisoners by 790 to 1,300 from the total population of about 5,200.

Instead of being in prison, offenders would instead go to a halfway house or be put on an ankle monitoring system, the Department of Corrections said.

"Does that mean we let everybody out? Absolutely not," said Commissioner Ronald Taylor with the Department of Corrections.
