| Presentation to focus on prison reform in Illinois |

Phillip Whittington, a corrections policy analyst for John Howard Association, will speak on “Justice System Breakdown: The Need for Prison Reform in Illinois” at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, in the Holmes Student Center Sky Room. The event is free and open to the public. Whittington will share information about current issues for those incarcerated in the Illinois correctional system, as well as their families and loved ones. He also will share his own compelling story of overcoming a life-threatening heroin addiction despite the justice system, not as a result of the system. Whittington overcame his addiction to graduate magna cum laude in 2013 from Loyola University in Chicago. He is enrolled at Loyola University in the MA Criminal Justice and Criminology program. He also is employed by the John Howard Association. He answers thousands of letters, and phone calls each year from inmates and their families, helping them to navigate the multi-layered and complex bureaucracies that comprise the Illinois criminal justice system.
