BEAUFORT, N.C. (WNCT) – The Town of Beaufort is cutting costs by using inmate labor. The Town of Beaufort uses inmates from the Newport Correctional Facility to pick up trash and do other Public Works operations and it’s saving them nearly a quarter of a million dollars a year in personnel costs. The town manager says without the program, the town would look to privatize trash collection. The program, decided on by the state, pays inmates just a dollar a day, saving Beaufort nearly $30,000 a year per employee they would typically hire. Employees, whether inmates or typical workers, pick up trash, collect recyclables, cut grass and perform other Public Works operations. Read More. |
