Legislators oppose bill that would put prisoners on parole

Many inmates, including some who are considered violent offenders such as rapists or armed robbers, would be released from prison after serving their minimum sentence if a proposed bill becomes law.

Answers are in the second document at the right. photo The so-called “presumptive parole” bill could come to a vote before the Michigan Senate Thursday after the House of Representatives approved it earlier this month, 67-39. Monroe County Reps. Jason Sheppard, R-Temperance, and Bill LaVoy, D-Monroe, voted against the measure.

Sen. Dale Zorn, R-Ida, said he also will vote no. photo “I oppose it,” Sen. Zorn said. “I think it’s too much of a risk.” Monroe County Prosecutor William Paul Nichols has openly campaigned against the bill, saying that with the exception of murder, almost all prisoners, including rapists, would be eligible to be released under the bill, if it becomes law.
