Authorities are investigating several counselors at Alameda County (Calif.) Juvenile Hall who are accused of facilitating wrestling matches between teenage detainees, a probation department spokeswoman said. The "unauthorized wrestling" matches reportedly occurred late at night in the San Leandro facility's maximum security unit, spokeswoman Nina Ramsey said. She said the teens were allegedly rewarded with candy bars, drinks and favors, "like time out of their rooms." Six staff members have been placed on paid administrative leave. An internal investigation is under way. "We believe this happened after lockdown," Ramsey said, referring to the time when detainees are ordered to return to their cells for the night. The Alameda County Sheriff's Department also is investigating any possible criminal activity on the part of the counselors, Lt. Jim Knudsen said. The wrestling matches reportedly occurred at the end of 2004, but were not reported until January. The facility houses more than 250 juvenile offenders between the ages 13 and 18. |
