A Johnson County (Kan.) jail inmate is being kept in isolation while undergoing treatment for active tuberculosis, the sheriff's office said Monday. Officials said the prisoner will remain in isolation until tests confirm he poses no further risk of contagion. The disease was discovered during routine screening given to all prisoners in custody for at least 10 days, and the diagnosis was confirmed by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. People who had close contact with the prisoner are being told about the illness and they will be offered treatment if infected, the sheriff's office said. Officials said contact must be both direct and extended for infection to result. The sheriff's office said because a tuberculosis infection can't be detected until 10 or 12 weeks after exposure, an investigation into how the inmate was infected will take at least three or four months. |
