| Early release for non-violent offenders raises concerns |

ANCHORAGE – The Alaska Department of Corrections is planning to release more non-violent offenders, either to halfway houses or through electronic monitoring. They said it’s a way to reduce the prison population and save money. Rep. Jim Colver hosted a public hearing in Palmer to learn more about the issue. On hand was two-time felon and former drug addict Terria Walters. “The individual accused with my son’s murder is a violent offender. I am a non-violent offender,” Walters explained. She knows the difference. The man accused of killing her son was being electronically monitored. Despite that, she said she supports releasing non-violent offenders, especially those with drug problems who could be released into rehabilitation. Read More. |
