| Iowa Department of Corrections phasing out program connecting offenders with victims of violent crimes |

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Corrections (IDOC) is nearly finished phasing out a Victim Impact program that connected inmates across the state with victims of violent crimes in an effort to stop inmates from becoming reoffenders. Officials said the program has not successfully reduced recidivism rates and will now be replaced with new programming. “The programs were originally designed to teach offenders about the human consequences of their crimes,” said Dot Faust, IDOC deputy director. “They were attempting to teach offenders how crime affects the victim and the victim’s family.” The Victim Impact program consists of a 24-week curriculum called “Listen and Learn” which uses coursework and videos to show offenders how their actions impact the people on the receiving end of a crime.
