SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner's administration has slashed the number of inmates at a Southern Illinois work camp by 67 percent as part of a controversial push to close the facility by year's end. According to the Illinois Department of Corrections, the Hardin County work camp near Elizabethtown currently has just 85 inmates, down from more than 260 when Rauner took office in January. The drawdown in population is occurring because the state isn't assigning new inmates to the camp, which typically holds inmates who have less time left on their sentences than many of those in more traditional prison settings.
