Due to persistent overcrowding issues, inmates are now being housed in the gym at the Schuylkill County prison. Warden Gene Berdanier said Wednesday at the monthly prison board meeting that the prison started housing eight to 10 men in the gym on Oct. 9. There were 323 inmates at the prison Wednesday. The monthly average inmate population has been at 300 or higher for the last six months. It was most recently at 313 for September. It peaked at 325 on Sept. 23. There are 277 permanent beds at the county prison. It has a suggested capacity of 240, which takes into account other factors like inmates that may need to be housed alone. The state Department of Corrections has given the county until Nov. 24 to reduce its inmate population to its approved capacity. Read More. |
