| Scam Buster: Prison Inmate Scammers Using Contraband Cell Phones |

Nobody expects a scam phone call from inside a jail. But then again, inmates have nothing but time on their hands, and they use it to think up ways to scam you out of money. “And unfortunately, there are a great number of cell phones that are smuggled into our prison systems,” says Lt. Paul Burch with the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office. These inmates know how to contact families who have relatives in jail. Here’s an example of one of the scams. A prisoner will call a family, acting as though they’re an official from the jail. They’ll tell them their loved one is about to be released, but before that can happen, they have to pay extra fees. They’ll tell them to go down to the drug store and put money on a prepaid debit or credit card. Read More. |
