A former sergeant in the Newport News (Va.) Sheriff's department has been charged with carnal knowledge of an inmate following a police investigation of reports that he had sexual relations with a jail trustee. Bruce A. Trader, 44, of the 300 block of 53rd Street was arrested at police headquarters last Thursday, police spokeswoman Holly Hileman said. Under the Code of Virginia, a correctional officer who uses his or her authority to engage in sexual relations with an inmate is guilty of a Class 6 felony. The charge also applies to a probation and parole officer, work-release supervisor or community-corrections employee who monitors offenders. A conviction carries a maximum five-year sentence. Hileman said the warrant says the sexual contact occurred in November 2004. Trader was released on a $1,000 bond. He could not be reached for comment. |
