GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A state legislator has introduced a bill to ban drones from flying near Michigan state-funded and private prisons.

There's good reason: A drone, with a package of contraband held by fishing line, crash-landed at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester on Monday, Oct. 26. Its payload included hacksaw blades, marijuana and heroin.

State Sen. Darwin Booher, R-Evart, introduced legislation last month to prohibit drones from flying within 1,000 feet of any correctional facility in Michigan. A violation would be a four-year felony with up to $2,000 in fines.

Booher was not immediately available for comment.

In a recent hearing, he said, "Some of those headlines look like; 'drones smuggle contraband over prison walls in South Carolina' (and) 'drones drop drugs in Ohio prison yards sparking a fight,'" according to Michigan Radio Network.
