Oregon prisons watchdog fired after threatening lawsuit

Leonard Williamson, the Oregon Department of Correction's chief internal watchdog, was fired Friday, a month after making the unprecedented move of threatening to sue the agency and its director – his boss – seeking $3 million.

Leonard Williamson, 51, had served about four years as the agency's inspector general, a position tasked with reviewing and investigating complaints filed by employees, inmates and others. Willamson reported to the agency's director, Colette Peters, herself a former inspector general.

Williamson was the subject of a personnel investigation over the summer that agency spokeswoman Elizabeth Craig said focused on his "general leadership and management style." Craig confirmed the investigation was recently completed, but said she couldn't yet release the investigative report or describe it findings.

"The decision Colette made was based on performance issues," Craig said. "The decision was based on the totality of information available. The human resources investigation recently completed factored in, but was not the only factor."
