Woman accused of smuggling pot into federal prison

BUTLER TWP., Pa. - An Illinois woman who was visiting a federal prison now finds herself in county jail after she allegedly tried to smuggle drug-filled balloons to an inmate.

Jennifer A. Mitchell, of Normal, Illinois, faces a felony and two misdemeanor charges after Pennsylvania State Police said she tried to smuggle marijuana to an inmate at the Schuylkill Federal Correctional Institute in Butler Township on Sunday.

Mitchell was visiting inmate John Vercusky, when a corrections officer saw her allegedly attempting to spit balloons into a bottle from which she was drinking, according to a news release. After Vercusky grabbed the bottle, a corrections officers confronted him, and he allegedly admitted there was marijuana in the balloons.
