| Report: Red tape hurts state hiring in Illinois |

SPRINGFIELD | A watchdog group says Illinois should slash the amount of red tape involved in hiring workers to staff state prisons. In a report released today, the John Howard Association said the state's cumbersome hiring system results in jobs staying vacant too long, forcing some of the best candidates to seek positions elsewhere. As an example, the report notes that the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice takes between six to eight months to fill teacher vacancies at its six youth prisons. "Undue delays in the completing of background checks and setting start dates for new hires can encourage the most highly qualified candidates to accept employment elsewhere," the report notes.
