Prisons working to keep cellphones away from inmates

Cellphones are dangerous weapons in the hands of inmates behind bars.

They can harass their victims, threaten witnesses, carry out attacks through accomplices and request contraband, according to corrections officials.

Officials said inmates with cellphones is a growing problem they deal with every day. S.C. Department of Corrections Director Bryan Stirling said changes have been made to crack down on inmates with cellphones.

“These cellphones are a commodity,” Stirling said. “It's a very dangerous weapon in the hands of an inmate in a facility.”
