ALCORN COUNTY, MS (WMC) - Mississippi's state auditor and corrections department said inmates in the Alcorn County jail have been moved to other jails after investigators found contraband inside the cells. "They had a way of getting out and that's not a good thing," resident Matther Mullins said. Investigators found at least one cell phone, knives, and keys with access to the doors and the commissary area in inmates' cell blocks. It has residents concerned. "It makes me wonder why they're in jail," resident Jimmy Peters said. The Mississippi state auditor, along with the Mississippi Department of Corrections Commissioner, discussed their joint investigation into this jail on Thursday. During their investigation into the misuse of funds in this jail, investigations found prisoners may have been working on private properties. They also found items such as nicotine, clothing, cell phones and even knives in a search of the jail. Investigators even found keys in the inmates' cells, which allowed them to come and go as they please. "It's surprising to me. It means they can give a key to someone they were seeing and they can come in later and try to break them out or something," Mullins said. "It appears to be a free for all that was going on in this facility," Mississippi State Auditor Stacey Pickering said. Read More. |
