Bid to have deputy killed nets inmate 24-year prison term

An inmate who made a dagger out of his dismantled leg brace and tried to hire another inmate to kill a deputy sheriff was sentenced to 24 years in prison Tuesday.
Gregg Savajian, 50, wanted to have Jefferson County (Colo.) Deputy James Murrow killed because he was upset over a bad haircut, said prosecutor George Brauchler.
But Savajian insists he is innocent.
He admits dismantling the brace, but contends he just wanted to dig a hole to pass notes to female inmates housed below his cell. He said he hid the pieces of metal after he realized he would be in trouble for taking the brace apart.
A jury convicted him in November of solicitation of first-degree murder and introduction of contraband.
The inmate he approached turned over the "shank" to deputies. The inmate said Savajian offered to have $200 put on his jail account if he would "take out" Murrow.
Five more pieces of metal were found hidden in Savajian's cell and bedding.
The discovery prompted a 20-hour lockdown and complete search of the Jefferson County jail at a cost of $17,000, said David Walcher, division chief of the sheriff's office.
"This act is disgusting," he said. "The public needs to know it won't be tolerated."
Judge Ruthanne Polidori acknowledged that the motive for the attempted killing remains a mystery, but "not all crimes have explainable motives."
Murrow said he was satisfied with the sentence. "I'm just glad it's over," he said. "His intent was that I was to be killed because he was mad about a haircut he gave to himself."
Savajian rushed through a haircut, butchering the back of his hair, and was furious when inmates made fun of him afterwards, calling him "baldy" in Spanish, Brauchler said.
Brauchler said he hoped the sentence would be a deterrent to others. "We want to make sure something like this is not repeated - ever," he said.

This case is a joke? Proof beyond a reasonable doubt? I mean c'mon people, killing someone over a bad haircut. Hi Reality calling, this case doesn't even make sense...another Tim Masters in the making? Who was this convicted felon that testified? What did he get to tell his story? Probation? What kind of jury convicted a man based on heresay. Did any money change hands? What kind of motive is a self given hair cut?!? Justice? I think George Brauchler wanted a notch in his belt and he got it. Wake up America. The scary thing is, no one cares about their rights being violated, there are no voices for the people... Pathetic.
