LINCOLN — A new state audit has slammed the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services for poor financial oversight, lack of computer automation and overpayments to employees. The audit, released by State Auditor Charlie Janssen on Monday, cited 60 items of concern, including that the department overpaid a medical contractor by $369,504 because of a lack of adequate review and overpaid employees by $1 million. The report said the department wasted time and risked errors by relying too much on manual processes, instead of computers, to compile things such as inmate medical records, medication use information and time cards for prison jobs. In one instance of a manual process gone wrong, a temporary employee shredded the payroll records of about 300 workers because of a lack of training. Read More. |
