| Auditor criticizes corrections department for lack of oversight |

LINCOLN — An audit released Monday criticized the Department of Correctional Services for a critical lack of accountability in the oversight of finances, the inordinate use of manual processes and a lack of communication between facilities. The consequences to the Nebraska taxpayers, said state Auditor Charlie Janssen, included dramatic overpayments, especially excessive overtime payments resulting in unnecessary costs to the state, excessive expenditures and insufficient accountability by the department. The audit covered the period July 1, 2013, through Dec. 31, 2014. Since then, the state has changed governors and has a new corrections director in Scott Frakes. Although the majority of the problems occurred under the previous administration, Janssen said, "we hope this report will be given serious consideration, and steps will be taken to ensure financial accountability and internal controls are improved."
