| Deadly Tecumseh State Prison Riot Might Have Been Avoided, Report Says |

LINCOLN — A deadly riot at the Tecumseh State Prison might have been avoided if there had been more open lines of communications concerning inmate complaints and adequate security staffing, according to a new state report. The State Ombudsman’s Office, in a 48-page review of the May 10 riot, said that while inmates had some legitimate complaints about new restrictions on participation in prison sports leagues and holding down prized jobs in the laundry, those concerns weren’t an excuse for the violent uprising. The report, which was to be publicly released today, also says that if the rural prison had more staff, with more experience, what began as a peaceful protest might not have spiraled out of control. Two inmates were killed, two guards were assaulted, and housing units were set ablaze and ransacked, causing more than $1 million in damage. “This event was, by any reasonable definition, more than a mere ‘disturbance,’ ” the report states. “This event was destructive, bloody, dangerous and terrifying.” Read More. |
