The South Bay Detention Facility was locked down last weekend after a brawl broke out among as many as 60 inmates. Six were injured, four of whom were hospitalized with puncture wounds from being stabbed with pencils, said Sheriff's Department spokesman Chris Saunders. The fight happened about 4 p.m. Deputies fired 30 to 40 pepper-ball rounds to break up the melee. The fight apparently started after one inmate struck another, Saunders said. The cause is under investigation. |
