A report on 9 & 10 news that the Oakbridge Inn on the north side of Clare, a shelter for homeless veterans, is now also a housing facility for parolees, has at least one local veteran’s organization concerned, despite assurances that both facilities are separated. The 9 & 10 Internet post reported that officials from the American Legion Post 404 in Harrison said they were told the facility would serve only veterans, and were surprised to hear that Oakbridge now has a contract with the Michigan Works! Re-entry Program to provide housing for “re-entry individuals” who have completed a prison sentence and been paroled. Clare County Veteran’s Affairs Director Renee Haley said she was also surprised. “On behalf of the Clare County Veterans Services, it is important for the public to understand that Oakbridge is a privately owned facility, that we have no control over who they house or how they are funded. We were also not aware of the contract with MDOC, until after it was in place. There has been no federal or state funds given to the establishment, other than the VA paying to house those eligible veterans.” She continued, “It has always been and continues to be our first and foremost concern and responsibility to make sure our veterans are receiving the proper care and treatment that they have earned.” Read More. |
