| Wyoming lawmakers take up penitentiary reform |

CASPER - The number of people sentenced to state prisons is on the rise. Officials at the Wyoming Department of Corrections warn they will soon have to add beds to the penitentiary system, which will cost tens of millions of dollars at a time when government revenue is down. Or the state could choose to change the way inmates are rehabilitated. For the past couple of years, Corrections Department officials have been devising ways to avoid adding new beds to the system, while keeping the public safe and ensuring inmates are ready to be successful for life after incarceration. They've received input from the Pew Charitable Trusts, which studied Wyoming's prison system. Changes are numerous and could include sentence reform; more drug rehab in secure, residential programs outside prison; giving more first-time, nonviolent offenders probation instead of hard time; and offering inmates incentives to be released on good behavior.
