| Prison reform must involve Legislature |

Many thought that things couldn’t get any worse for Nebraska’s Department of Corrections. During the last two years there has been the miscalculation of release dates for hundreds of inmates; the release of Nikko Jenkins, who went on to kill four people in Omaha; and chronic overcrowding at the state’s prisons. Unfortunately, more misery was poured on that unsavory list last week. All of that occurred during Gov. Dave Heineman’s administration. Now comes a state audit report that management of the prisons was even worse than thought during the Heineman years. The audit alleges that there was poor financial oversight, an inadequate computer system and overpayments to employees. In addition, the audit found mismanagement of prescription drugs, including distributing 2,647 Oxycontin pills to prisoners without the required approval of the medical director.
