| Legislators to continue prison review |

FAIRBANKS — The House Finance Committee has noticed a meeting next week about Alaska’s prison growth drivers and costs. The budget-formulating committee will is scheduled to hold its meeting at 9 a.m. Monday at the Anchorage Legislative Information office. The members are scheduled to hear a presentation from the Pew Charitable Trust, which is helping the state review its corrections system, identify cost drivers and produce recommendations to cut the state’s budget. The Alaska prison system and the overall criminal justice system has come under tougher scrutiny in recent years thanks in large part to a bipartisan effort of lawmakers, including North Pole Sen. John Coghill, to explore new methods that can curb prison growth and get better outcomes. Read More. |
