LUNENBURG, VA (WWBT) - The healing power of animals is well documented, and the Virginia Department of Corrections is finding that animals behind bars, specifically "shelter dogs," are beneficial. Local prisons are pairing broken people with troubled dogs, and often, the result is incredible. Life behind razor wire in rolling hills of Lunenburg County can be a lonely and desolate existence. Yet for a select few, there is friendship in the making at the Lunenburg Correctional Center that may well be life-changing for both man and beast because of the Department of Corrections Pen-Pal Program. A small number of inmates learn the basics of dog training. Soon afterward, shelter dogs, in many cases, the animals that nobody wants come into the prison to learn basic commands and socialization skills, with the goal of making them more adoptable. For inmates, the program is a huge privilege. "The have to stay on their toes," dog trainer Katie Locks says. "They have to have good behavior. There can't be inside charges against them.
