County awarded $20M for inmate treatment center

After almost two years’s worth of effort and one failed attempt, Humboldt County was awarded $20 million in state funding on Thursday to construct a new reentry program center for jail inmates and probationers as they transition back into society.

During a press conference held by Humboldt County Sheriff Mike Downey on Thursday, Probation Department Adult Services Division Director Shaun Brenneman said the center will consolidate crucial services that are currently scattered throughout Eureka and therefore less accessible to inmates and those out of custody.

“We really identified that reentry services were crucial, missing pieces in what we are doing in our community,” he said. “And this will address the problem in ways that we just don’t have the capacity to do now.”

The proposed 24,000 square foot Humboldt Community Corrections Reentry Resource Center is set to be constructed on the east side of the county jail in Eureka where the gravel parking lot currently resides and would add 44 new beds as part of a reentry housing unit for inmates. Six of these beds would be dedicated for a mental health treatment housing unit. Downey said these 44 “soft beds” would allow the inmates more freedom than the regular jail as they will be attending different classes and programs.
