| Group meets to talk about prison overcrowding |

Lawmakers and law enforcement officials are meeting in St. Paul tomorrow (WED) to talk about Minnesota's growing prison population. DFL State Senator Ron Latz of St. Louis Park heads the volunteer task force and says the focus will be on drug sentencing reform. He says in years past. With more than 500 inmates in county jails across the state, the Department of Corrections is requesting more than $140 million in bonding to build a new prison housing unit in Rush City. Appleton and Swift County officials as well as state lawmakers from that region want the state to consider leasing the currently-empty Prairie Correctional Facility in Appleton to alleviate over-crowding. Swift County Commissioner Gary Hendrickx says when the prison is operating, the local community benefits not only from having hundreds of people working, but area businesses also benefit.
