CHILLICOTHE - Jail food, insurance and medical costs for inmates are among the increases within the Ross County Sheriff's Office budget for 2016 and reflect more than $256,000 over what was appropriated in spending this year. Ross County Sheriff George Lavender met with the Ross County Commission on Monday afternoon to outline his departmental budget request. As part of his overall budget, Lavender is seeking the purchase of five new vehicles as part of an ongoing fleet rotation that he said has been beneficial. "I feel like fleet management as far as costs is coming down," Lavender said. Lavender also is seeking $309,471.75 for jail food next year, up from the $294,735 appropriated this year for the same expense. Food for inmates at the Ross County Jail is up by 5 percent, Lavender said, based on year-to-date spending so far. Meanwhile, a bulk of other expenditures within the Ross County Sheriff's Office is tied to personnel and linked to a contract that runs until 2017. However, Lavender told commissioners two people within his department plan to retire next year, meaning he will have to pay out $33,512 to one individual and $36,577 to the second person.
