| Sheriff Marlin Gusman to New Orleans City Council: I can't make payroll without another $3.5 million |

Practically ensuring that the New Orleans City Council's budget talks Tuesday (Nov. 17) will be tense, Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman has asked city lawmakers to send him an emergency $3.5 million to cover overruns in his operating budget this year. Without that money, Gusman has told council members, he won't be able to make payroll this month. But that amount is above and beyond what a court-appointed accountant had drawn up for the Sheriff's Office budget for 2015, and it's in addition to a $2.8 million allotment the council had planned to consider sending to Gusman at its regular meeting on Thursday.
