DEER LODGE - A Montana State Prison employee lost her job after being charged with having sex with an inmate and other inappropriate misconduct. Aside from having sex with an inmate, former Montana Correctional Enterprises employee Sherrill Kraakmo is also charged with providing a cell phone and a charger to the same inmate and making unauthorized visits to the Cow Camp at the Montana State Prison Ranch where the inmate worked. Prison staff members who engage in a sexual relationship with inmates are not just having sex; they are having sex without consent. That is because the law states an inmate cannot legally consent to have sexual intercourse with a person who has disciplinary authority over the inmate. Lambert said she could not speak to the specifics of Kraakmo's misconduct due to the ongoing court case but did say prison employees are sometimes susceptible to inmate manipulation. She said, "I don't want to generalize that all inmates are manipulators because that's not true but there are manipulators and there are some staff that are vulnerable but 99% of our staff and 99% of the inmates do not have that behavior."
