You probably already know that having a pet companion is great for your health, that dogs help veterans deal with PTSD, and that dogs play an important role in the care of children with autism. But did you know that dogs can also be valuable in the rehabilitation of prison inmates? Susan Jacobs-Meadows of Sandy Springs, Georgia, had been passionate about rescuing animals for a long time, and in 2013 she created a program bringing in the human element. Canine CellMates was launched at the Fulton County Jail, pairing 10 inmates with shelter dogs; the idea was to improve life for the inmates as well as reduce recidivism, while at the same time saving dogs from being euthanized.
