The Legislature's Public Safety Committee paid a visit to the maximum security Souza-Baranowski prison in Shirley, Mass. last week as part of their ongoing investigation into the murder of former priest John Geoghan. TheBostonChannel reported that the visit had been arranged before Geoghan's murder at the facility, allegedly at the hands of another inmate. The four members of the Public Safety Committee toured the Shirley facility for nearly two hours Monday, but asked few questions specific to Geoghan's murder. They said they were there to listen and to get a larger, global view of the Souza-Baranowski prison. Their ultimate goal is to find out what happened to Geoghan and if it could happen again. The maximum-security prison is, as of two years ago, the closest Massachusetts has to a state of the art facility. The board will explore how a prisoner can be murdered while surrounded by the latest technology in security. The committee will hold a public hearing later this month and a full report will be released by the governor's administration. Meanwhile, correctional legal services advocates recommend another trip to the facility may be needed. More pointed questions and more direct answers will be offered on Oct. 28 when the Public Safety Committee holds a hearing at the Statehouse. That is also when prison officials and legal aid advocates will offer their own explanations as to what happed the day Geoghan was murdered. |
