CHICAGO – The number of Illinois inmates released on parole has increased as lawmakers look to reduce the prison population, but funding to help those parolees stay out of trouble has dropped dramatically during the state’s budget crisis. The Illinois Department of Corrections said the number of parolees has grown 14 percent in the past four years, to more than 28,000, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner is among the state officials who argue that reducing the number of people in prison will save the state millions and make Illinois’ correctional facilities safer. He has set a goal to reduce Illinois’ inmate population by one-fourth in the next decade, and has said the key to doing so is ensuring ex-offenders become “productive members of society” and don’t go back to prison.
