| Sheriff’s department to get full complement of trusties to aid in county work |

Union County supervisors received some news Monday that can potentially save the county a substantial amount of money as well as improve some services to residents. Sheriff Jimmy Edwards said he had talked with Mississippi Department of Corrections Commissioner Marshall Fisher, who said he can soon bring the county’s number of jail trusties up to the maximum number it is certified for: 22. That means the county can have more trusties to work on solid waste collection, trash pickup along roads and help with maintenance and a variety of public events without having to provide salary and benefits to outside employees. Earlier this year Marshall was appointed to the position after his predecessor, Christopher Epps, resigned amid corruption charges. One of Marshall’s first actions was to decide to end the jail trusty program, saying it was expensive and inefficient. Legislative action last year meant that many prisoners were being released early, leaving vacancies at the main corrections units. Marshall said he saw no reason to be paying counties to house state prisoners when the main units had spaces. Read More. |
