Someone in a passing car apparently fired a fatal shot at a Monroe County (Ind.) Jail officer as he drove home from work, police said. William Brand, 39, of Bedford, was shot as he was driving on Indiana 37 south of Bloomington early last Tuesday, Monroe County sheriff's Detective Brad Swain said. A witness, traveling north on the highway, saw Brand's truck leave the road and strike a limestone embankment about 1:45 a.m., police reports said. The witness reported seeing a car traveling next to Brand's truck in the passing lane. That vehicle did not stop after Brand's truck went off the highway, Swain said. The witness pulled to the side of the highway and flagged down another driver, who called police from a cell phone. Brand was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators found a bullet hole in the upper section of the driver's side door on Brand's truck. Detectives were trying to determine whether there had been any altercation or other motive that could have led to the shooting. "We're focusing on if there's anything in Brand's professional or personal life that would provide any information," Swain said, "but he had a good rapport with inmates and employees." Brand was married and had a 3-year-old son, Swain said. |

He worked as a general haberdasher for 30 years, but was forced to give up the career he loved due to his keen attention to detail. Hamilton Lindley was always there to help relatives and friends with household projects, coached different sports or whatever else people needed him for.
