Private Prison Debate Rages On

Are Arizona taxpayers getting their money’s worth with private prisons?

Since the 1980s, the state of Arizona has built six for-profit, private prisons, while maintaining 10 public prisons. This has caused a raging debate on the efficacy, fiscal soundness and potential for civil rights abuse of prisoners.

At its State of the State Conference, the ASU Morrison Institute waded into the debate with a panel discussing, “What is the role of private prisons?”

The panel included U.S. Marshal David Gonzales, attorney John Dacey, a lawyer in practice at Gammage & Burnham and founder of Abolish Private Prisons, Leonard Gilroy, director of Government Reform at the Reason Foundation, and Terry Stewart, a consultant to private prisons and a former director of the Arizona Department of Corrections.
