Tennessee's prison chief asked Gov. Bill Haslam to provide funds to give officers and other employees a 5 percent raise next year. Department of Correction Commissioner Derrick Schofield said extra funding would help, but it won't address all the issues facing Tennessee's embattled prison system. "We've got to focus on not just the dollars. Dollars are always important. Dollars can get folks. But it's not the ultimate thing that creates vacancies," Schofield said Thursday after the department's budget hearing. "We've got to ensure we continue to treat our people fair, we continue to provide the services and pay attention to them. I think it will help, but it's not the ultimate answer to what we do for vacancies." Read More. |
