| Inmate Death under Investigation |

The Connecticut Department of Correction is investigating the untimely death of an inmate at the Enfield Correctional Institution. At approximately 3:11 p.m. on Friday, December 4, 2015, correctional staff responded to a nonresponsive inmate believed to have been involved in a physical altercation with another inmate in the cell. Correctional and medical staff immediately initiated emergency and life saving measures. The inmate was transported to an outside medical facility, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 4:02 p.m. The deceased inmate has been identified as 53-year old Charles Gattert of Prospect, Connecticut. Gattert was serving a six year sentence for Risk of Injury to a Minor and had been incarcerated since September 26, 2012. The exact manner and cause of death will be determined by the State Medical Examiner’s Office. The Department of Correction and the Connecticut State Police are investigating the death. |
