Willow Creek church packages hope for Illinois prisoners

In row after row of Willow Creek Community Church's sprawling auditorium, church members plopped mini-doughnuts, Christmas cards and inspirational, religious-focused books into brown paper sacks.

The 4,000 attendees of the Sunday early service followed step-by-step packing instructions illuminated on two video boards on either side of the stage, helping family members with armloads of books and making sure the Krispy Kreme doughnuts and honey buns were placed on top.

"Nobody wants crushed doughnuts," executive pastor Heather Larson said.

Starting this week, about 70,000 care packages assembled at the church's South Barrington main campus and regional satellite locations will be on their way to prisons and jails across Illinois. After two years of reaching tens of thousands of prisoners through the holiday program, this year Willow Creek set out to send a gift to each one of the state's inmates.
