| SA prison beds increase: Mobilong expands while extras added to Mount Gambier and Port Augusta |

An extra 112 beds will be added to three South Australian regional prisons as the state continues to deal with an influx in prisoner numbers. In its mid-year budget review, the State Government approved funding for an additional 72 beds at Mobilong Prison near Murray Bridge, 24 for Port Augusta and an extra 16 beds for Mount Gambier Prison. Nine, eight-bed modular independent living units will be built at Mobilong Prison at a cost of $10.7 million, and they are expected to become operational by July. It is the first expansion in many years for the Murray Bridge facility, since the Government abandoned its $500 million proposal to build a "super prison" at the site in 2009. Read More. |
