Ohio prison staff did not aid escape bid

Seven Mansfield Correctional Institution employees placed on paid leave did not try to help two death row inmates in their recent escape attempt, a prison spokesman said last Tuesday. "The investigation revolves around breach of security and how the inmates were able to get out of their recreation cage," said Scott Basquin, MANCI public information officer and warden's assistant. "We are not saying the staff had any culpability in assisting them. We need to review what took place." Prison officials released the names of the seven suspended employees last Tuesday. They are Maj. John Morrison, unit Manager Ron Pawlus, Sgt. Keith Werner, Sgt. George Scott and Corrections Officers Timothy Zeigler, Jeffrey Whitaker and William McGlone. Convicted killers Maxwell White, 39, and Richard Cooey, 37, tried to climb out of a caged recreational area by climbing on a pile of snow and lifting the top off the cage. Cooey was caught between two perimeter fences, and White tried to climb the first fence, according to reports. Both inmates suffered minor cuts and scrapes during the escape attempt. White was convicted of the January 1996 shooting death of Trooper James Gross of the Ohio Highway Patrol's Ashland post during a traffic stop on Interstate 71. Cooey was convicted of five felonies in Summit County. He has been in prison since 1986. In response to the escape attempt, specially trained state Department of Rehabilitation and Correction response teams from six other prisons, plus the department's Strategic, Tactical and Response unit, conducted a "clearout" operation on death row. They were searching for contraband. "There was nothing serious found," Basquin said.
