Inmate housing costs continue to drop

Costs incurred by Madison County for housing its inmates at Washington County continued to drop last month, falling to $20,950 for the month of November.

While the figure doesn’t include mileage or overtime spent on transporting the inmates, Madison County Clark Faron Ledbetter said the county has spent, to date, $313,900 this year for housing inmates since Madison County was forced to transition its jail to a 24-hour holding facility in January.

Last month was the lowest the county had been billed in eight months, with Washington County charging $23,600 to house Madison County inmates at its detention facility. For September, the county was charged $28,900, the highest since June, when it was charged $27,350. The bills hit a fever pitch in the spring, with Madison County footing bills of $38,200, $46,100, and $45,350 in March, April and May, respectively, after receiving much lower bills of $12,300 and $17,750 in January and February.

Because the county had only budgeted $200,000 in the 2015 budget for inmate housing costs, the Madison County Quorum Court voted in June to appropriate $157,000 to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office’s prisoner housing fund.
