| Former correctional assistant superintendent shares insights on Lincoln Hills |

Mark Towne knows what it's like to manage inmates. "I've seen the bad sides, and that's just part of my career," Towne said Wednesday. For 33 years Towne worked as a correctional officer, supervisor, and trainer in five Wisconsin facilities before retiring as an assistant superintendent from McNaughton Correctional Facility in Lake Tomahawk. It was a career Towne was proud to see his children pick up, until pride turned to fear this fall. "My whole career I spent keeping staff safe, and here I was having to advise my own kids that were down at Lincoln Hills because of the failures of the administration," Towne said. Staff and administration at the Lincoln Hills Correctional School in Irma now face a Department of Justice and FBI investigation into staff abuse allegations. Towne watched the news develop with interest, but not a lot of surprise. His son, daughter, and daughter-in-law—who all work at the facility—had filled him in on their experiences at the school.
