In her first major announcement as Corrections Minister, Judith Collins says the money will also help take care of the cost pressures associated with an increase in inmates and enhancements to electronic monitoring. The new Corrections Minister, Judith Collins, said the funding would address the cost of the greater than expected prison population growth and improvements to electronic monitoring. The Corrections Department is financially struggling to keep up with the growing prison population sparking a $17.6 million cash injection from the Government. As of October 2015, the number of incarcerated Kiwis is 800 higher - or the "equivalent [of] a large-sized prison" than forecast in 2011, she says, "despite significant progress in reducing crime and improving public safety".
